What is a case bound book?

A case bound book, also known as a hardback, features a rigid outer cover securely attached to the internal pages, providing superior protection and a high-end, professional finish. This construction makes hardback books ideal for projects where presentation and longevity matter.

Hardbacks are a popular choice for self-published novels, photographic collections, product showcases, commemorative books, theses, or dissertations. At Kall Kwik Chelsea, we ensure your case bound book not only looks exceptional but also stands the test of time.

Frequently asked questions

There’s no real difference – both terms describe the same binding method. A case-bound book (also called hardback) has a rigid outer cover securely attached to the inside pages, offering durability and a professional finish.

We offer standard sizes such as A4 and A5, as well as bespoke dimensions. You can choose portrait, landscape, or square formats to best suit your content.

Yes. We use state-of-the-art digital and litho presses to ensure your imagery, text and graphics are reproduced in sharp, vibrant colour.

Typically, hardback or case bound books can range from around 32 pages to up to around 500, depending on your chosen paper weight and binding type. We’ll help you find the perfect setup for your project.

You can personalise your book with a range of finishing touches, including:

  • Gloss or matt laminated covers
  • Foiling or embossing
  • Spot UV highlights

We’ll guide you through the best options to match your design and budget.

As hardback (case bound) books use a solid outer cover and a defined spine, a small portion of each page naturally curves into the centre fold, known as the gutter. This can make inner edges of artwork or text less visible when the book is opened flat.

To avoid losing vital details, position all important content at least 15mm from the spine edge. Keep text, logos, and focal design elements safely within the visible area. If your layout includes a full image across two pages, expect a slight loss in the middle. It’s best to avoid placing faces, small lettering, or intricate graphics in that zone.

If you’re unsure about margins or bleed, our Kall Kwik Chelsea team can review your artwork before printing and guide you on the best setup for perfect results.

It depends on the local Centre. Some are able to produce one-off books whereas others may have a minimum order quantity. Whether you need one copy or a full production run, check with the team at Kall Kwik Chelsea to see what the most cost-effective solution is for your project.
